2011 CONTEST FINALISTS:

Finalist #1:

I have the ugliest kitchen anyone could have in today's world. It is a kitchen from the 1960's. The cabinets were put in early 70's and the flooring is pulling away from the sides of the room. As you can see from the picture I have no room for items to be put away due to lack of cabinet space. Cabinets 40 years ago did not have alot of storage. I do not think they are made with wood. The wallpaper is peeling away from wall due to heat and cooking. Color scheme is that of decades ago and I will be very surprised if you can find a uglier one.

Finalist #2:

The original house and the current kitchen are from the 1940's. Nothing in this kitchen is practical. The kitchen has minimum counter space for my gram to prepare for her husband let alone all five kids, their husbands, wife, nine grandkids, and one great grandchild. I remember bathing in my gram's kitchen sink, but so does my mother. Bright orange paint hides the less appealing layers of wall paper. Most of the cabinets lack doors and purpose. Plastic hides the hole in the wall leading to the basement stairs. Yet the best part about the kitchen would be the hole in the ceiling, which leads to the closet upstairs. My Gram makes the best comfort food in the world and not just for the family but for everyone. She deserves this.

Finalist #3:

You should pick my kitchen because the cabinets are old and mismatched. The finish is chipped and stained. There is not enough storage space and work space. Parts of the range does not work. Everything is old. There could be no other so ugly. My kitchen is the ugliest.

Finalist #4:

Our kitchen is the ugliest because there is no storage, style or function. The cabinetry and counter top is from an old sewing room and the appliances are close to 10 years old. The flooring is old and worn multi-color linoleum and teal walls and ceiling. The house is built in 1922 and the space reflects that with 5 door ways, 2 windows and no counters. We closed one doorway with the hope of remodeling but then our daughter came along and the priorities shifted to a nursery and bathroom (since there is just one and it too was ugly!) The kitchen ,right now, is just a place to cook and clean up but unfortunately is not the center of our home the way we would love it to be.

Finalist #5:

My kitchen is the original trailer cupboards and countertops and are falling apart. I have tried to paint them to make them look more presentable and have hung curtains where doors are missing (take note of the crooked doors). The pictures speak for themselves.

Finalist #6:

Our kitchen countertops are made of five different styles and colors of material. The counter edges are different shapes and some pieces have broken off. The quality of the cabinets is poor and there are no drawers at all. The island that used to be in the kitchen actually fell apart and we finally threw it away last month, so now we have even less storage and counter space. All the cabinet doors are slightly crooked. The corner cabinet does not close properly and does not use the corner space efficiently. The sink is just resting in a hole that is slightly too big and so the sink shifts when we do the dishes, and water runs through the cracks. Nothing in our kitchen is level, starting with the floor, which causes everything else to sit crooked or not work well.

Finalist #7:

My parents purchased this home in June of 1971, which I took over when they passed on 1 year ago. This kitchen has not been touched since a fresh coat of paint in 1979. The metal sink base is rusted through on the bottom and is not stable. The old metal cabinets are rusted on bottoms and the doors won't stay shut. There are holes in the carpet and vinyl floor. The ceiling is rotted in places due to past leaks in the bathroom. There is no counter space or much storage space. There is no insulation in walls and the doors are in bad condition. Any improvements to this kitchen would help greatly.

Finalist #8:

Once upon a time, back in the 1850's, someone built a house that, like most other houses, had a basic kitchen - me. I had a sink, and a stove of some sort, probably wood or coal. I was considered modern! But a lot has happened between then and now At one point someone even kept sheep and pigs in me! Sheep and pigs in a kitchen! You can just imagine how much I enjoyed that! The smell -phew! In 1975 Mediterranean cabinets were installed, along with white Formica countertops with green and gold streaks. Back then that was considered really hot. But now it's 2011, 36 years later, and I'm looking mighty tired. My cabinets are sagging and dull, and my countertops are chipped and broken. I could really use a new look. It would make me and my favorite owner so very happy.

Finalist #9:

Metal cabinets from the 70s, dark wood from the 80s, floor is chipped, ceiling falling down and missing in spots, 1/2 drywalled 1/2 plaster/wall paper, & 2 different counter types.

Finalist #10:

Peeling wallpaper, ripped floor. Door falling off. Island ripped apart. Cabinets falling off.

Finalist #11:

My mom's kitchen should be picked for "YBC's" ugliest kitchen contest winner because she always cooks and entertains the family and many great meals have come out of this little ugly kitchen. The cabinets are from the late 30's and 40's, World War II. They are rusted and in bad shape. Hardly any work space or storage space. When she preps for meals she has to use the side on the sink and put a cutting board on it. Any baking she has to roll out on her small kitchen table which is low and hurts her back. Floor is in very bad shape, wearing through and wearing in front of sink and refrigerator. The floor color looks like mud. Puke it is awful! It is not functional for cooking properly. She really needs this done. This would be a way of saying thank you for all those "good meals". Also she is a widow and her husband passed away three years ago. He was a chef and worked at the Genetti for 62 years and would of wanted this for her. Thank you.

Finalist #12:

One hundred fifty words cannot describe the ugliness of our kitchen. I think the biggest reason is the hideous terra cotta particle board cabinets that are falling apart. The cabinets are topped with painted chip board countertops. Overall, the kitchen is embarrassing, the horse hair plaster is cracking and falling apart. The exterior wall is not insulated and is covered with fake plank paneling and the remnants of a brick chimney. The dropdown ceiling is sagging and stained from leaks. The floor is ugly gray and white checkered tile that is peeling up throughout.

We would love to be able to have guests over to entertain, but it is just not feasible with our kitchen. I know my wife would love to make Christmas cookies and have the space to do it without having to set up folding tables. Our beautiful colonial house needs a kitchen to match. Please help it happen.

Finalist #13:

I've been living with the ugliest kitchen for about seven years.

Built in the mid 1800's, my home was originally a stagecoach stop. It has a great deal of historical value, having all the original mountain stone foundation and walls.

About seven years ago I discovered an abundance of honey bees on my property and in my home. I found them nested in the walls and ceilings of my bathroom and kitchen. I had to completely gut out these rooms down to the outside wall structure to rid the hundreds of nests and honeycombs. I have no wall to hang cabinets on and no ceiling for light. There is no insulation and the windows are original: my heating and cooling costs are literally through the walls and roof! I'm in a catch 22, any and all extra money is spent on these utilities.

Please help me fix my ugly kitchen.

Finalist #14:

I would like to be chosen the Ugliest Kitchen Contest winner because the kitchen is the heart of our home. My wife, Mary, and I have seven children and six grandchildren. Living in an old farmhouse, preparing food is not only life sustaining but a way of life. We garden, pick berries and can a large portion of our food. Our kitchen is the center for all family gatherings. With family, our friends, and our children's friends, we often feed twenty or more! These gatherings make the kitchen the focus of our lives. It is the fabric that keeps us together, happy, and fulfilled. Our kitchen is sixty years old. Drawer fronts and handles are missing. Storage if very limited. A new kitchen would provide a wonderful touch as we continue to make our kitchen a place of love and laughter, and a place where memories are made.
